TOEFL

Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL )

TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is an internationally recognized standardized test that measures the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. The TOEFL test is commonly used for academic purposes, such as admission to English-speaking universities and colleges, as well as for visa and immigration purposes in some countries. It assesses the test-taker's ability to understand and use English in academic settings through four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.

The TOEFL is composed of four sections – reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The TOEFL iBT is a long and rigorous test (3 hours) designed to assess whether or not students are ready to study in an English-speaking university. Many students spend 3 to 6 months preparing for the TOEFL before taking the exam. The TOEFL Essentials exam was designed to be an easier, cheaper English test with a less academic focus.

What is the format ?

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam consists of four sections:
Listening:
In this section, test-takers listen to lectures, classroom discussions, and conversations, and then answer questions based on what they heard.
Reading
This section measures the ability to understand academic passages in English. Test-takers read 3 or 4 passages and answer questions based on the content.
Writing
This section consists of two writing tasks. In the first task, test-takers write an essay based on reading and listening materials. In the second task, they write an essay in response to a prompt.
Speaking
Test-takers respond to speaking tasks that require them to express opinions, summarize information, and verbally communicate in English.
The entire exam takes about 4 hours to complete, and it is administered via computer. Each section is scored separately, and scores range from 0 to 30 for each section, with a total score of 120 possible.

What is the scoring system

The TOEFL exam is scored on a scale of 0 to 120, with each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing) scored from 0 to 30. The total score is the sum of the scores from the four sections. Additionally, test-takers receive a score for each section indicating their proficiency level:
Reading: 0-30    |    Listening: 0-30    |    Speaking: 0-30    |    Writing: 0-30
Scores are based on the number of correct answers and are converted to the 0-30 scale. Colleges and universities typically require a total score ranging from 90 to 100, but specific score requirements vary by institution.
